From Wayne Knight’s liner notes: On page seven of the February 22, 1956 issue of Downbeat magazine, the headline read, “James Disbands; Forms 10-Piece All-Star Group.” This action was mainly dictated by the continuing prohibitive road costs of leading a 16-piece big band with diminishing ballroom returns. Also, the formation of the small group, according to James, was to guarantee his star sidemen steady work at least 40 weeks a year playing locations that could not afford the high price of a big band.
New arrangements of many of the James staples were skillfully re-penned by the gifted Neal Hefti to give the illusion of a big band sound, yet distinctly had the feeling of a small swing group. The big little band transformation took place in little more than three weeks, in time for their opening January 25 at the San Diego Auto Show. The group would be a short-lived musical experiment for the leader, and sadly, Capitol chose not to record them. The two Mr. Music “Harry James And His New Jazz Band” CD’s comprise forty tracks on compact disc that help create a rather unique place for The New Jazz Band in the recorded legacy of the leader.
